The fin, sometimes called the vertical stabilizer, provides directional stability. It keeps the nose pointed straight ahead. The rudder is the movable part of the fin. Deflecting the rudder produces a turn. You can find out what the fin does by taking it off and flying your plane without it. This video shows what happened when I flew my AMA Alpha without its fin.
